Bone Broth: Our Ancestors’ Superfood

Why is bone broth so darn good for you?

Because it’s good for the soul. It’s also good for the gut, the brain, the immune system and the joints!

You can’t go wrong with bone broth. It’s one of those simple, nourishing foods that can have profound healing effects. Not to mention, it’s yummy, warm and oh-so-comforting.

You make this magical elixir by simmering bones (ideally from grass-fed cows) for 24-48 hours, which allows essential nutrients to be drawn from the bone, into the broth.

Besides being delicious and soothing, bone broth can support your body in so many ways.

It can help...

  • Ease pain and repair joint tissue. Because bone broth is high in collagen, glucosamine, chondroitin and other amino acids, it can help to rebuild cartilage and repair tendons and ligaments,
  • Lower inflammation throughout your body. Bone broth has a rich array of important amino acids (like the aforementioned, glucosamine and chondroitin) which help lower inflammation.

  • Repair leaky gut, a condition that can be a root cause of allergies, autoimmune diseases, skin issues (like psoriasis), hormonal imbalances, IBS, digestive problems, acid reflux and food sensitivities. Because bone broth helps lower inflammation and also contains glycine, proline and collagen, it soothes and rebuilds the mucosal lining of the digestive system, which is crucial for resolving the above conditions.

Gut Instinct Recipe for Bone Broth


  • 3 to 4 quarts filtered water
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

  • Two handfuls of bones from organic chicken or beef, preferably pastured/grass fed (available at local farmer’s markets or at

  • A few stalks of celery

  • 1 onion, cut in half

  • 1 carrot

  • 2 cloves garlic, cut in half

  • 1 tablespoon organic all purpose seasoning or adobo seasoning

  • 1 tablespoon salt or salt to taste. Use sea salt or “Real Salt” (a high mineral salt available at natural food stores)


  • Place water, bones and 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar in large stainless steel pot.

  • Bring to a boil. Let boil for 60 seconds. Turn down heat and simmer for about 24 hours.

  • Add water as needed.

  • After several hours of simmering, add another tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.

  • Three to four hours before you are done cooking your broth, add the celery, carrot, onion, garlic, seasoning and salt. Continue to simmer for three to four more hours.

  • After about 24 hours total cooking time, remove from heat and allow to cool a little bit.

  • Strain broth into separate pot or bowl. Add more salt, if needed, according to your taste.

Bone broth can also be done in a crockpot, but you’ll need to cook it for longer to account for the time it takes to reach a simmer.

One of my favorite ways to store bone broth is to freeze it in ice cube trays and then, once frozen, transfer the cubes to a Ziploc bag and place them in the freezer. This means you’ll have bone broth on hand to throw into a sauce, soup or when cooking grains or beans. Voilà!
